Anthropic wants to set aside five percent of its shares for workers AI might replace
Anthropic wants a new fund, backed by five percent of its shares, that could give to charities or pay people directly if AI costs them their jobs.
Anthropic wants to move five percent of its shares into a new group called the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, The Decoder reports. Shareholders still need to approve it. The fund would make large gifts to nonprofits. It could also study direct payments to "certain populations." Its main focus is job losses from AI.
Anthropic is setting the fund up as a subsidiary it fully owns, not as a nonprofit. Anthropic says this gives it more freedom. It also promises the money will not go to lobbying or political gifts. Anthropic's board decides whether the fund gets extra shares. Anthropic has not said what would trigger them.
Elon Musk replied on X that Anthropic should give the shares straight to the public. He says he will give one SpaceX share to each of about 72 million US children next year.
